The preparations for a new plant culture or lawn involve excavating and leveling the soil surface, especially when the ground is hard and bumpy. When it comes to small areas, as large areas are more of a task for farm tractors with suitable implements, this work can be done with walk-behind tillers, which can also apply a fertilizer or compost deep into the soil. The simplest models are powered by electric motors, while the most advanced ones have high-output petrol engines with a reverse gear. The motor or engine propels a shaft on which an array of blades is installed, digging through the soil on its way. The wheels and handles, with their ergonomic profiles, make it easier to steer.
